Nevada issued $100 million in bonds for highway projects on Wednesday,
including work on the Carson City bypass and I-580 project.
The highway bonds were included as part of the funding recommended in the
Nevada Department of Transportation budgets for highway projects around
the state. Altogether, some $150 million is included in that budget to finish the
northern half of the bypass project to U.S. 50 and begin design work as well
as acquire land for the southern half.
The budget also includes final preparation and design on the I-580 project so
that major construction can begin on the final segment of freeway between
Carson City and Reno in 2002.
The rest of the bond money will go into the U.S. 95 project in Las Vegas.
Treasurer Brian Krolicki said there was great interest in the bonds with bids
offered by five major financial institutions. Dain Rauscher won the highway
bonds.
Over the next 10 years, the state plans to spend about $285 million on the
bypass and another $230 million on I-580.
