Nominees sought for community awards - Staff reports

CARSON Sunday, March 4, 2001 4:00 AM Nominees are being sought for the second annual Community Awards sponsored by the Nevada Appeal and Carson Access Television to recognize outstanding achievements during the past year.

Awards will be presented in eight categories:
- Student of the Year
- Teacher of the Year
- Artist of the Year
- Athlete of the Year
- Boss of the Year
- Employee of the Year
- Humanitarian of the Year
- Organization of the Year
Last year, an award was given for Academic of the Year. This time, however, that honor has been split to recognize both a Student of the Year and a Teacher of the Year.

"We had a hard time choosing last year between teachers and students who were nominated for Academic of the Year," said Nevada Appeal Publisher Jeff Ackerman. "So we decided to expand the awards to enable us to recognize both."

Nominations must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 13. They must include a written description of the activities, talents, achievements or contributions that would justify the award. The more detailed, the better.

The address for nominations is Nevada Appeal, PO Box 2288, Carson City, Nev., 89702. They may also be e-mailed to appeal@tahoe.com. People sending nominations should include their own name and telephone number, so they may be contacted for additional information.

Residents anywhere in the Nevada Appeal's circulation area are eligible for the awards.

Members of the Nevada Appeal's reader panel and CAT-10 board will narrow the list of nominees to three finalists in each category. The award winners will be announced at a luncheon May 18 at the Carson Nugget.

It is the second year for Community Awards sponsored by the Appeal and CAT-10, although they stem from a 30-year tradition of the Carson City Area Chamber of Commerce.

The change was made a year ago to broaden the awards, which had previously been oriented toward businesses when the Chamber of Commerce hosted them.

The first Community Awards winners, presented June 8, 2000, were:
- Academic of the Year: Tom Badillo
- Artist of the Year: Karen Chandler
- Athlete of the Year: Darrell Rasner
- Boss of the Year: Richard Linkuhl
- Employee of the Year: Bob Williams
- Humanitarian of the Year: Sam Waldman
- Organization of the Year: Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada

The group also gave special recognition to Mary Fischer for her work with Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides.
