Q & A on the news - GROW recently received a $2,000.00 donation from Coldwell Banker and money from the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission. What is GROW and why is it raising money?
Gardeners Reclaiming our Waysides, GROW, is a grassroots organization that started as a cooperative effort of Master Gardener volunteers and concerned citizens of the community. It obtained its nonprofit statue is June 1999.
GROW’s mission is to ensure the establishment of a low-maintenance, water-efficient landscape on the slopes, interchanges, and gateways along the first phase of the Carson City Freeway using native or naturalized plants.
GROW is working with other resident groups and organizations to have landscaping and a multi-use pathway included along the freeway corridor. The goal is to develop an eye-pleasing corridor for walking, biking, and other recreational activities and an attractive roadway for vehicular traffic.
Design and engineering three gateways and the interchange at Arrowhead Drive will cost $30,000.00. GROW has also applied for a federal transportation grant of $1.4 million, but has no idea if or when the grant will be awarded, said member Marie Bresch.
GROW members are also working with the Nevada Department of Transportation on the landscaping for phase II of the freeway.
For information about GROW call Secretary Jan Mill at 882-5055 or visit the group’s Web site at: www.growinc.org. To make a donation send to GROW, 508 Terrace, Carson City, NV 89703.
